What to Look for in a Boat Storage Facility

February 1, 2026·6 min read

Boat storage is more complex than RV storage because boats need different handling depending on their type. A 16-foot bass boat has very different storage needs than a 40-foot cabin cruiser.

Types of Boat Storage

**Dry stack storage** is popular for smaller powerboats. Your boat is stored in a rack system and forklift-launched when you need it. This keeps it out of the water, reducing hull growth and corrosion. Prices range from $100–$500/month depending on boat size and location.

**Marina slip** storage keeps your boat in the water at a dock. It's convenient for frequent users but exposes the hull to marine growth and requires regular bottom painting. Monthly rates vary widely from $200 in smaller inland marinas to $2,000+ in premium coastal locations.

**Open land storage** is the most affordable option. Your boat sits on a trailer in a lot. Most boat owners use this for off-season storage.

**Indoor storage** provides maximum protection and is ideal for seasonal storage or high-value vessels.

What to Ask Before Signing

  1. Is there a travel lift or forklift for launching?
  2. What are the gate access hours?
  3. Is there a pump-out station nearby?
  4. What's the maximum boat length and beam?
  5. Is there electrical hookup for battery maintainers?
  6. What security features are in place?

Pricing by Region

  • Inland facilities: $50–$200/month
  • Coastal facilities: $150–$800/month
  • Premium marina slips: $500–$3,000/month
